Women in Martech

To kick off our Women in Martech Series, and to be considered one of 50 Women You Need to Know in Martech - 2018, we asked women to provide their thoughts in three areas: Career, Martech in Practice and Women in Martech.

What advice would you offer someone getting into marketing in this landscape?

The ever-changing behavior of consumers and predicting their next moves presents a challenge worthy of renewed motivation from day-to-day.

Adapting technology to enhance, engage and excite consumers is an element of this work that drives me forward. There is no time to sit still in the martech and mobile industries.

Every project I get to work on hints at the future of the mobile world — it's an exciting place to be. It’s amazing to be part of such an influential industry, always changing, growing and adapting to the needs of the consumer.

This is what motivates me to deliver unique, quality options to modern mobile users.

How has your role changed because of marketing technology?

My role is completely focused on technology. I spend a portion of my time learning about new, innovative technology and becoming familiar with it, as I am responsible for understanding and managing new technology.

Now, more than ever, it is critical to understand the ever-changing landscape of available technologies. Not only do I need to keep up with the fast-paced world of technology, I need to truly understand the requirements of each system.

Knowing and integrating these elements is the only way to have a full picture of your marketing stack, KPIs, goals, and ROI. This is what makes technology truly marketable.

Do you feel women have a strong presence in the martech industry? Why or why not?

Absolutely, women have a strong presence in the martech industry. In fact, women are leading the change in marketing. I have been part of many women-focused organizations throughout my career.

When we started these organizations, there were five or six women on our teams, now there are thousands. Martech is a female-dominated field. Women have the skills, knowledge and intuitive ability to understand consumers and meet them where they are with interesting campaigns through complex technology.

My team includes some of the most talented women I have worked with. They are experts in their fields and make a profound impact in their space.

Other challenges

Many chief marketers still have narrowly defined roles that emphasize advertising, brand management, and market research.

Agencies need to broaden the role of marketing in general and the CMO in particular.

In 2018 we will see companies will either transition the CMO title, or potentially even replace it, with a Chief Growth Officer-type position, one who has more responsibility for revenue, P&L, company spend.
